Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 brings dual-core to the masses

An upgrade to the popular smartphone will see Samsung make dual-core handsets more affordable, while also bumping up a few other features in the process

It seems that the success of the mid-range Samsung Galaxy Ace Android smartphone has made them want to milk the Ace brand for all its worth. Over the past few weeks, the company has already launched a slight upgrade in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus and the dual-SIM version in India, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos. Now, Samsung has taken the wraps off the Galaxy Ace 2, which brings a faster processor and a larger screen to its mid-range heavyweight.

Along with 4GB of internal memory, the Galaxy Ace 2 features an 800MHz dual-core processor, which would make it Samsung’s first mid-range dual-core handset. And the screen has gotten a slight bump up to a 3.8-inch affair. Of course, this means that there will be a higher demand from the battery, which Samsung has upgraded to a 1,500mAh unit. Just like its predecessor, it carries a 5-megapixel camera on the back, but also adds a front-facing VGA camera for video calls.

Strangely, it will run on Google Android v2.3 Gingerbread and not pack Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, but you can guarantee that it’ll receive an update for the latest Android version soon enough.

There is no indication of pricing or availability yet – in fact, Samsung hasn’t even shown off a render of what the phone will look like – but given that this falls in the Galaxy Ace line-up, we would expect it to be a mid-range handset.
