USA to ban some airline passengers from carrying electronics after 'terror threat'

Royal Jordanian Bans Devices

News of the ban landed Monday when Royal Jordanian Airlines said in a since-deleted tweet that it received a directive from "concerned U.S. departments" that passengers would not be permitted to bring any electronic items into the plane's cabin, except cellphones and medical devices.

"Following instructions from the concerned U.S. departments, we kindly inform our dearest passengers departing to and arrive from the United States that carrying any electronic or electrical device on board the flight cabins is strictly prohibited", the statement read.

If Royal Jordanian's tweet proves accurate, details of the ban have not even reached the airline's NY sales offices.

The ban would involve devices larger than mobile phones.

CNN's Jon Ostrower reports that more than a dozen airlines are affected by these new procedures, but it's unclear which airlines we're actually talking about.

The airline serves New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, as well Montreal and Detroit.

The tweet said the ban applied to laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games-all of which would need to be placed in checked baggage.

The tweet was later deleted.

In a exceptionally rapid response, a DHS spokesman returned Quartz's emailed request for comment in 57 seconds, saying "We have no comment on potential security precautions".

The full list of 13 nations has not been released, but Jordan's Royal Jordanian and Saudi Arabia's Saudia airliners are included in the ban.

Cabin rules for flights under US jurisdiction are typically set by the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Royal Jordanian didn't immediately respond to FP for immediate comment.
