Over the year, the company was able to increase this indicator by 6.3 percentage points, and in quarterly terms – by 4.1 percentage points. Experts point out that the last time AMD’s market share in the x86 -compatible processor segment came close to this value was in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Analysts have noted an increase in AMD’s share in all segments of the processor market, where it competes with Intel. Desktop x86-compatible processors “red” in the third quarter accounted for 20.1% of all chip shipments to the market – 0.1 percentage points higher than a quarter earlier and 2.1 percentage points higher than in the same period last of the year. We can say with confidence that this is primarily the merit of the 3rd generation Ryzen processors on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. Intel released direct competitors for them only in the second quarter of 2020, to which AMD responded with the Matisse Refresh release in the form of three Ryzen 3000XT models with increased frequencies.

The most significant growth was observed in the segment of shipments of processors for laptops. Here AMD set a new personal record and in the third quarter showed a result of 20.2% of all shipments of mobile processors to the market, which is 0.3 percentage points higher than in the last quarter and 5.5 percentage points higher than in that the same period last year. The Ryzen 3000 (Picasso) and then the Ryzen 4000 (Renoir) APUs helped AMD reach new heights in the mobile segment.

It should be recalled that in a couple of days, sales of the new Ryzen 5000 (Vermeer) processors based on the Zen 3 architecture will start, which Intel will not have an answer to until the first quarter of 2021 until it releases the Rocket Lake-S generation chips. It is very likely that by the end of the fourth quarter, AMD’s share of the x86-compatible  processor market will increase again.
