BMW plans to double electric vehicle sales in 2021

BMW has announced its intention to double sales of all-electric vehicles this year. This is because the German automaker is keen to release new models to meet its CO2 reduction targets and compete with the electric vehicle market leader now in the US, Tesla.

The company did not say how many all-electric vehicles were sold last year. However, it is known that a total of 193 thousand units were sold for electric and hybrid vehicles. At the same time, Tesla delivered about 500 thousand electric vehicles to the market in 2020.

The source says that BMW currently has 13 models of electric and hybrid vehicles sold in 74 countries. According to the automaker, in the past, global sales of electric vehicles rose 31.8% and accounted for 15% of sales in Europe.

The company also announced plans to double the number of electrified car models on offer by 2023. This means that BMW will expand its offer in this segment in the coming years and will deliver 25 models of electrified vehicles by 2023, most of which will be fully electric.

While carmakers have to meet their emission reduction targets, more countries are announcing plans to ban the sale of new vehicles with combustion engines in the future. While such bans may not come into force until 2030, they also put pressure on manufacturers to accelerate the development of electric vehicles.
