Release expected with watchOS 7.2

The Apple Watch will soon be able to detect atrial fibrillation with ECG at higher heart rate levels than it currently does. This will allow you to run the ECG application without having to calm down and “knock” your heart rate down to an acceptable level.

The ECG feature introduced with Apple Watch Series 4 can detect heart problems, including signs of atrial fibrillation. The existing version of the application works correctly with a heart rate of 50 to 120 beats per minute. As Apple notes, a heart rate below 50 or above 120 beats per minute affects the ECG app’s ability to detect atrial fibrillation, and the reading is considered inconclusive.

In this case, the pulse may be low due to certain medications or insufficient conduction of electrical signals in the heart. Low heart rate can also be associated with professional sports. A high heart rate can be the result of exercise, stress, nervousness, alcohol consumption, dehydration, infection, atrial fibrillation, or other forms of arrhythmia.

Apple is now reported to have filed an application with the US Food and Drug Administration and received approval to change this range to 150 bpm. The change could be implemented already with the release of watchOS 7.2, which is expected in the coming weeks. The innovation can begin to distribute from several regions, including the United States

Note that Apple made the ECG function available to Russian Apple Watch users quite recently – with the release of the watchOS 7.1 update in November.
