Farewell Golf. Volkswagen will abandon the iconic hatchback
Thomas Schaefer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Car, in an interview with the German resource Automobilwoche, said that the current VW Golf – the eighth generation – will be produced until 2028. Next year, the hatchback will be thoroughly updated, and after that it will be sold for another four years. New internal combustion engines will not be developed for this model, in 2028 the Golf as we know it will cease to exist. Instead, there will be an electric car. Volkswagen plans to keep the brand itself, but it will be a completely different Golf. Thus, the iconic car, produced since 1974, which for many years was the leader in sales in Europe and gave the name to a whole class of cars, will retire.
What kind of electric car will replace the Golf is not reported, but the recently announced Volkswagen ID electric hatchback will act as an electric alternative to it. 2. It will be released in 2025 and will be sold with gasoline and diesel Golfs in parallel for several years. The developers promise that the cost of ID. 2 in the base will be 25 thousand euros, that is, it will be an affordable electric car.
