Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the first Samsung smartphone with variable refresh rate

Samsung has announced a new generation Super AMOLED display that supports dynamic refresh rate changes. This technology can significantly reduce energy consumption and extend the battery life of gadgets.

note1

The screens in modern smartphones can operate at a different fixed frequency, which can be selected in the settings: it can be, say, 60, 90, 120 or 144 Hz. The novelty Samsung changes the same frequency dynamically – depending on the current operating mode and the tasks being performed.

So, the new Super AMOLED screen can switch between 120, 60, 30, and even 10 Hz. The last mode is for displaying static content.

The world’s first commercial smartphone with such a panel was the flagship Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, shown in the images. It is claimed that the use of a variable refresh rate panel can reduce the power consumption of the display module by 22% compared with conventional solutions.

Moreover, it is said that in 10Hz mode, the power consumption gain can be up to 60% over traditional displays.
