Hyundai and SK Innovation will jointly develop battery ecosystem for electric vehicles

Hyundai Motor Group and SK Innovation have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a battery ecosystem for vehicles equipped with an electric propulsion system.

Hyundai

The partnership aims to improve the stability of the supply chain for batteries for electric vehicles and create an efficient turnover of resources at all stages – from raw materials processing to production. The companies intend to help in optimizing battery design, introducing new schemes for their recycling, etc.

One of the areas of work will be to popularize the battery as a service (BaaS) model. This scheme assumes the possibility of leasing or renting batteries. This approach is expected to accelerate the proliferation of various interactions between automotive companies and battery manufacturers.

In the first phase of the collaboration, Hyundai and SK Innovation will assemble and test battery packs from the Kia Niro electric vehicle. Specifically, the companies will seek solutions to improve the efficiency and environmental friendliness of electric vehicle batteries, including recycling non-vehicle batteries for other applications such as energy storage systems (ESS), and recycling where batteries are removed. valuable metals: lithium, nickel, and cobalt.

The ultimate goal of the collaboration is to build an efficient value chain for batteries and improve green operations throughout the life cycle of batteries for electric vehicles.
