iOS 16: These iPhones and iPads are slated to receive the next big update

With iOS 15, Apple had brought along many older iPhones. Now there are indications that numerous models from 2015 could be denied the update to iOS 16. Among other things, the iPhone 6s would bless the time.

A little over six months before the official announcement of iOS 16 during WWDC 2022, the first rumors are circulating about which iPhones and iPads will receive the next big update. According to the as-yet unconfirmed information, Apple appears to end support for devices with the A9 chip in 2022.

iOS 16: iPhone 6s and the 1st iPhone SE should be out

If you believe the information from the French blog iPhone soft (via 9to5Mac ), Apple will remove some iPhones from its own update portfolio for the first time in three years. In the past few years, the manufacturer had also given all models that received iOS 13 the updates to iOS 14 and 15.

With iOS 16, Apple could withdraw support from all older devices with A9 and A9X chips. Devices include the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, which launched in 2015, and the first iPhone SE from 2016.

If iPhone soft is correct with its message, Apple should require an A10 chip as a minimum requirement for the update to iOS 16. As in previous years, older, compatible models will probably not receive the full range of new iOS functions. Apple is only offering the full range of features of iOS 15, including ML functions, for the iPhone 12.

The following iPhones should receive the update to iOS 16:

  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 Mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPod Touch (seventh generation)

iPadOS 16: Older iPads are also likely to fall out

In addition to the older iPhones, according to the leaked information, a few old iPads are also falling out of the update cycle. With the 2022 iPadOS version, not only the iPad 5, the iPad Mini 4, the iPad Air 2 but also the first iPad Pro generation with 12.9- and 9.7-inch screens from 2015 will remain on iPadOS 15. All other iPads from 2016 and newer should receive the next major update.

  • iPad Pro (2022)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (fifth generation)
  • iPad Pro 11 (third generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (fourth generation)
  • iPad Pro 11 (second generation)

  • iPad Pro 9.7
  • iPad (ninth generation)
  • iPad (eighth generation)
  • iPad (seventh generation)
  • iPad (sixth generation)
  • iPad (fifth generation)
  • iPad Mini (fifth generation)
  • iPad Mini (sixth generation)
  • iPad Air (fourth generation)
  • iPad Air (third generation)

iPhone soft, which claims to get its information from Apple’s iOS seeding circles, has a really good hit rate with regard to iOS updates. The updated candidates for iOS 13 and iOS 14 already predicted them correctly. Last year they were wrong with iOS 15 because even then they predicted the end for devices with the A9 chip. With iOS 16, the end of the updates for the 2015 iPhones could really have arrived. Furthermore, the devices are likely to receive security patches at irregular intervals, as Apple has been doing for years.

There are still no specific details about innovations that Apple will bring with iOS 16. However, it is speculated that the manufacturer will announce its first AR / VR glasses during WWDC 2022, which should work in combination with iPhones. Corresponding functions should be part of the next iOS update. It is very likely that we will learn more details about the update in the coming months.
