IPhone 12 display replacement will cost $ 279
Apple has announced how much it will cost to repair the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. The cost of replacing the iPhone 12 Pro’s screen was $ 279, which is unchanged from last year’s iPhone 11 Pro, despite the use of new ceramic-reinforced glass. But the same procedure for the base iPhone 12 is also priced at $ 279 – an impressive $ 80 increase over the iPhone 11.
For the base iPhone 12, that’s a significant price increase from the $ 199 that would have previously had to be paid to repair the iPhone 11 screen – probably because it now has an OLED display instead of an LCD. Apple has charged $ 279 for OLED screen repairs starting with the 2017 iPhone X. The cost of display repairs covered by AppleCare Plus is unchanged at $ 29.
The new displays used in the iPhone 12 series, according to Apple, are protected by a toughened ceramic glass called Ceramic Shield, which is tougher than any smartphone’s protective glass and has four times the drop resistance. The use of the new material did not raise repair prices, despite a possible decline in Apple’s share of profits.
The same applies to the elimination of “other damage” caused by, for example, liquid entering the device. The cost of repairing the iPhone 12 Pro, in this case, will be $ 549, that is, the same as in the case of the iPhone 11 Pro. Whereas in the case of the iPhone 12, the same procedure will cost $ 449 versus $ 399 to repair the iPhone 11. Under AppleCare Plus, the amount remains at the same level at $ 99.
Prices for repairing the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 12 mini have not yet been announced. Overall, repair costs have not changed for potential iPhone 12 Pro owners, although it’s a shame to see the new base iPhone now require more expensive repairs. Hopefully, the advertised Ceramic Shield is really tough enough to reduce the number of service center calls due to a broken screen.
