This will be a light version of Windows 11 for low-cost student computers.
Recently, rumours have reappeared about the imminent release of a light version of Windows 11 – Windows 11 SE. Recall that this OS was lit up in mid-June, and now the estimated date of its announcement has appeared: the software novelty can be presented on November 9. Microsoft has scheduled a special event for this day to discuss education-related issues.
The official announcement from Microsoft says: “ We will share an inside view of the latest technology solutions, investigating the learning gap caused by the pandemic. Hear stories from Microsoft partners, school leaders and selected special guests, and learn about new and existing Microsoft Education technologies. ” In general, we will talk about education, and Windows 11 SE, according to rumours, is just designed for low-cost computers used in educational institutions. Such an operating system (and low-cost devices based on it) will directly compete with Chrome OS and Chromebooks.
Along with Windows 11 SE, it may debut an inexpensive laptop running it – Laptop SE. He is credited with an 11.6-inch screen, Intel Celeron N4120 platform (4 cores, 1.1-2.6 GHz), 8 GB of RAM, USB-A and USB-C ports.
Microsoft “Tenjin”: Surface Laptop for students with Windows 11 SE in progress
With an even cheaper Surface Laptop based on a slimmed-down Windows 11 SE (“Student Edition”), Microsoft is targeting the extremely lucrative educational sector, particularly in the USA. The 11.6 “notebook developed under the code name” Tenjin “is to be priced below the Surface Laptop Go.
As Windows Central reports, the “Tenjin” project is to compete especially in the USA against the Chromebooks from Google, which are very successful in the education sector. The website also wants to know the technical specifications from “insider sources”.
Gemini Lake Refresh and 8 GB LPDDR4
Of the hardware currently in prospect, the “Tenjin” project clearly plays in the “low-cost league”, because it should run on an Intel Celeron N4210 (” Gemini Lake Refresh “), which has a TDP of 6 watts with four cores works without HT and 1.1 to 2.6 GHz.
The mobile CPU has an integrated GPU of the type Intel HD 600 with 12 compute units and is flanked by a total of 8 GB LPDDR4 and up to 64 GB flash memory (eMMC). The display measures 11.6 inches (29.5 cm) and has a comparatively low resolution of 1,366 × 768 pixels and a point density of 135 PPI.
In terms of price, measured in terms of hardware and the envisaged area of application, the student notebook is to be offered significantly below the Surface Laptop Go, which is currently changing hands for around 590 euros. Windows Central names a price of 400 US dollars as the target for the “Surface Laptop SE”.
Windows 11 SE for school and university students
The “Tenjin” project is to be part of Microsoft’s “K-12” education program and is based on a significantly slimmed-down Windows 11 SE (“Student Edition”) that has been specially adapted to the needs of schoolchildren and students.
The website speaks of expanded options for adapting the new operating system specifically for low-end hardware and setting it up for certain user groups in the classroom.
