Outgoing year in numbers: consoles outstripped PCs, but lost to mobile platforms in the global gaming market

GamesIndustry published a report on the figures for the gaming industry in 2020 in the form of statistics that it found interesting. Includes estimated global market size, top-selling titles in the US, Japan and the UK, and the highest and lowest-rated games of the year on Metacritic.

Mobile platforms turned out to be the leader of the global gaming market in 2020. Their revenues amounted to $ 86.3 billion, which is 25.6% more than in 2019. The second place was taken by consoles – $ 51.2 billion with an annual growth of 21%. The top three were closed by the PC platform, whose revenue amounted to $ 37.4 billion (an increase of 6.2%).

In UK retail in 2020, it leads both in copies and in revenue of FIFA 21 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe closed the top three in terms of copies sold, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War surpassed it in terms of revenue.

In the US, in dollar terms, the top 3 consists of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Moreover, the data of the latter does not even include digital sales.

In Japan, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ring Fit Adventure and Final Fantasy VII Remake are leading.

In terms of the number of releases in 2020, Nintendo leads (17 games), while the Japanese platform holder has two launched franchises – the same as Sony, Microsoft and Ubisoft.

The most talked-about game on Twitter was the multiplayer RPG Final Fantasy XIV. It is followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Cyberpunk 2077.
