Owners of a Steam copy of Hitman 2 will not be able to transfer content to Hitman 3 for free: IOI has released a guide to launch

Studio IO Interactive answered in detail the main questions regarding the upcoming launch of the stealth action Hitman 3. As it turned out, the owners of the previous parts on Steam will have to buy Hitman 2 again in order to transfer the content to the Epic Games Store.

Hitman 3 will release on January 20 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. It was also announced that the Nintendo Switch version will launch on the same day. Recall that on the Nintendo platform, the game will work through streaming technology – a stable and constant internet is required.

The game will be released simultaneously all over the world at 16:00 Moscow time. Then digital copies will become available and the Hitman 3 servers will be launched. Preloading the project will only be possible on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. On a PC, IO Interactive did not provide such an option – downloading Hitman 3 will begin at the time indicated above.

Also, the disc edition of Hitman 3 will require a day one update. The digital version will be automatically loaded already with the patch. The patch includes access to VR mode for PlayStation and locations that were not added to the disc.

Hitman 3 will take up about 60-70 GB of disk space on all platforms (except Switch and Google Stadia), taking into account the content required for Hitman and Hitman 2. The Hitman 3 copy does not provide you with the two previous instalments by default – you must own those games to access them.

The game will be released in two editions: standard and extended. The only difference between the two is the Deluxe Pack, which includes six additional contracts, costumes, items and weapons, a digital soundtrack for each game in the trilogy, director’s commentary (quest intros), and a digital artbook.

Hitman 3 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will receive a free upgrade to the version for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. You will not have to pay to switch from one generation console to another.

All Hitman 2 owners will be able to transfer their saves to Hitman 3 within the same platform (Xbox, PlayStation or PC). After completing this process, you will start the game with your existing profile: rank, degree of exploration of locations, open bonuses, progress in challenges, unlocked tasks and costumes. All this also applies to the first Hitman, if you purchased the Legacy Pack for the second part. It is noteworthy that by starting to play Hitman 3 and only then deciding to transfer progress, you will lose all the achievements gained in the prequel up to this point.

The save migration process requires an IOI account and can only be done through a browser – this cannot be done in-game.

And finally, the most interesting: why will Hitman 2 have to be bought twice on PC?

Hitman 3 allows players to access locations from previous games in the trilogy (and any additional content you have) through an Access Pass. The system detects what you’ve already installed for Hitman 2 and can provide the corresponding Access Pass at no additional cost on the same platform.

This process will work between consoles of different generations. For example, if you have Hitman 2 on a PlayStation 4, you will be able to download the Hitman 3 Access Pass for both PS4 and PS5. The same is true for the Xbox family of consoles.

On PC, the situation is as follows: if you bought Hitman 3 from the Epic Games Store (and the game is only available there) in the first 10 days after launch, then you will receive an Access Pass for Hitman (plus all additions to the first part). In addition, with a free copy of the first Hitman in EGS, you can download this pass anytime after purchasing Hitman 3.

Since Hitman 2 is not in the Epic Games Store, you will have to buy its content again. Fortunately, IO Interactive will discount the eligible Access Pass 80% for the first 14 days after the release of Hitman 3. The studio also promises that pass discounts will appear regularly on EGS.

For both Hitman and Hitman 2 content on Nintendo Switch, each eligible Access Pass will be available for purchase from the Hitman 3 in-game store.
