Samsung has filed a document with the FCC that describes how an ultra-wideband radio receiver works. It will allow the smartphone to track the exact location of other devices emitting various types of radio signals and position them in the surrounding space.

A similar chip, called U1, is used in smartphones of the iPhone 11. At the moment, its capabilities are not used, but it is expected that Apple will soon release an AirTag tracker, which will attach to any objects, such as keys, making them easy to find using smartphone in case of loss.

If Samsung actually equips the Galaxy Note 20 with such a chip, it will be interesting to see which apps use it. A scenario in which Samsung will present its own tracker similar to the unannounced AirTag looks quite likely. In any case, reliable information about the presence or absence of an ultra-wideband receiver in the Galaxy Note 20 will become known on August 5th.
