Samsung’s flagship smartphones will receive Android updates for three years instead of two

During the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event held today, the South Korean company unveiled the flagship smartphones Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 2, tablets Galaxy Tab S7, and Tab S7 + and other new products. It was also announced that the manufacturer will be updating the operating system on flagship devices within three years. Previously, Samsung provided two-year full support.

The announcement of up to three generations of OS updates means that Samsung’s flagship smartphones presented today will receive Android 13 when that version of the software platform is officially launched. This means that Samsung will now update smartphones in the same way that Google is doing, which has been bringing new versions of Android to Pixel-branded devices for at least three years.

The post said the new update policy will apply to smartphones starting with the Galaxy S10, which shipped with Android 9. This means Galaxy S10 users can look forward to Android 12 due out next year. The same policy will apply to Galaxy S20 smartphones that were released earlier this year, as well as Galaxy Note20 devices and upcoming Samsung devices.

It looks like Samsung’s new policy will not apply to entry-level and mid-range smartphones such as the Galaxy A and M series devices. These models will likely continue to receive Android updates for two years, as they did in the past. However, the new policy means that users of Samsung’s flagship devices will be able to get the latest Android features for longer and use smartphones without having to worry about buying new models.
