Tesla will recall nearly 135 thousand old electric cars due to problems with flash memory

Tesla is forced to initiate a massive recall program for its flagship electric cars, the Model S and Model X, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The problem affects machines equipped with an on-board computer based on the NVIDIA Tegra platform and an eMMC flash module with a capacity of up to 8 GB. During the operation of vehicles, this drive wears out, which gives rise to a whole range of various problems.

In particular, the touch display, through which all vehicle control is carried out, can be disabled. Because of this, among other things, it is impossible to use the rearview camera, change the operating modes of the air conditioner, turn on / off the heated windshield, etc. In other words, the problem directly affects traffic safety.

Earlier, many years of complaints from the owners of Model S and Model X bore fruit: Tesla promised a warranty replacement of faulty blocks in cars no older than eight years or those that traveled no more than 100 thousand miles (160 thousand km).

And now, under pressure from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla is forced to initiate a revocable program. Almost 135 thousand vehicles fall under it, including Model S sedans from 2012–2018, as well as Model X crossovers that rolled off production lines in 2016–2018.

The recall campaign starts on March 30th. It should be noted that the NHTSA demanded to repair about 158 thousand cars, but in some of them, the problem has already been eliminated.
