The vulnerability allowed the PS4 emulator from the MediEvil remake to run on PS4. But not everything is so simple

As you know, in last year’s MediEvil remake, you can launch the original game from the first PlayStation – for this, you need to complete all the soul trials. Recently, hackers gained access to the built-in emulator through which she works, and tried other games in it. Such an opportunity appeared thanks to the Bug Bounty program from Sony, which opened access to earlier versions of the PlayStation 4 firmware.

he emulator was extracted using a vulnerability in firmware version 6.72, released a year ago. It was able to run WipeOut 3, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, and Grand Theft Auto 2. The famous blogger Lance McDonald shared on Twitter a video demonstrating the work of the original Silent Hill. You won’t be able to play without problems – in some games, there are too many graphic artifacts and other emulation errors, while others, for example, Wild Arms and Syphon Filter, do not go further than the main menu or the initial logo. Details on how different games work on the emulator can be found here.

This version of the emulator is probably only optimized for MediEvil Remake. It is believed that this same program is used to run classic games sold on the PlayStation Store. MacDonald himself is not going to further study the emulator, but perhaps other enthusiasts will do it. To access it, you need firmware version 6.72 or higher.

It is possible that games from the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 will be able to work on the PlayStation 5. Sony still does not disclose all the details of the backward compatibility of the new console. In June of this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the system continues to test about 4,000 games with the PlayStation 4, and said that the executives were pleased with the results. A few weeks ago, a Sony spokesman told  GameSpark that the company has decided to focus on compatibility with the current generation platform, and is not ready to announce anything about support for games from earlier consoles. Leaks speak in favor of the fact that on the PlayStation 5 it will be possible to play projects from all four previous generations of the system.

In the past, MacDonald revealed one of PT’s most frightening secrets, walked the streets of Silent Hill in the same teaser, unblocked  60 frames per second in Bloodborne, and showed the content cut from it, and also looked between the legs of the hero Death Stranding. In June, he questioned the veracity of rumors about a PC version of From Software’s gothic RPG.

Last week, Bloomberg and Nikkei reported an increase in orders for the supply of PlayStation 5. By April 2021, Sony plans to ship 10 million consoles.
