AAC is a joint development between Volvo Cars and the Swedish company Blueair. The key components of the complex, which is part of the CleanZone system, are an innovative multifilter, a PM2.5 class particle detector (particles less than 2.5 microns), and a high-voltage ionizer.

AAC works as follows. An integrated climate sensor measures the amount of PM2.5 suspended particles in the passenger compartment. Further, two other components of the system come into play: particles entering from the outside are first ionized and then captured by a high-tech multifilter. If the air outside is too dirty, its supply is stopped and the function of recirculation and purification of the air that is in the passenger compartment is activated.

Air pollution information is shown on the central display of the Sensus on-board system. In addition, the data is transmitted to the Volvo On Call mobile app for smartphones, which allows the car owner to remotely assess the level of air pollution in the cabin and clean it before driving. It is noted that thanks to AAC, the air in the passenger compartment is 95% purified.
