First, it will find application in consumer-grade solid state drives
The Chinese company Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) introduced a product symbolizing the achievement of an important technological milestone: a 128-layer NAND flash memory.
YMTC launches 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory
The X2-6070 series of chips uses proprietary XTracking 2.0 multi-layer memory architecture . It should be noted that the direct predecessor of this memory is a 64-layer crystal based on the XTracking 1.0 architecture, which entered mass production recently, in September 2019. Most other manufacturers of flash memory, including Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, after 64-layer memory, first switched to the production of 96-layer memory and only in the summer of last year introduced 128-layer products. As planned , YMTC was able to skip this step.
According to the manufacturer, the new memory will first find application in consumer-grade solid state drives, and then it will come in drives for corporate servers and storages.
Recall that YMTC is part of the state conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup and is one of dozens of participants in the program to localize advanced electronic technologies and reduce dependence on imports.
