In recent years, 3D Realms have grown fond of shooters with ’90s and’ 00s-style gameplay, like Ion Fury or Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. The new project in a different genre is more of a spiritual heir to Hexen and Heretic in the Middle Ages with immersive sim elements. The action of Graven takes place in a dark universe, where you play as a condemned priest who is in a town among the swamps. You have to travel to various places to find out the truth about heretics.

In the beginning, the priest has only a staff and a book in his hands. He can conjure and thereby kill his enemies, as well as use magic to open passages. But gradually he will have other weapons such as a crossbow and a sword.

Graven is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 by Slipgate Ironworks. Although the game uses archaic methods to create an atmosphere of projects from the late nineties, it is quite technically modern in many aspects. For example, it has destructible environmental objects, as well as physics of boxes and bodies.

Graven has extensive levels with many passageways. Some of them are open, but some are covered with a web or a wall – the first can be set on fire with a fire spell, and the second can be broken with destruction magic. In addition, the weapon itself is undergoing various improvements that will help you in battles with enemies and – sometimes – puzzles.
