At closed auctions, such cars cost much more
RM Sotheby’s auction house sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for a record $51,705,000. It is stated that this car has become the most expensive in the world ever sold at public auction.
In 1962, this car was prepared directly at the factory for endurance racing, including Le Mans. To do this, the chassis was modified, the appearance was slightly redesigned and the standard three-liter engine was replaced with a larger 4-liter V12 from the Superamerica model.
The car debuted at the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometers, becoming the only 250 GTO in the works team that season. The Ferrari drivers were able to win their class and take second place in the overall standings.
$51,705,000 paid for unique Ferrari 250 GTO
Previously, the most expensive Ferrari and the most expensive car in the world that was sold at auction was the 250 GTO coupe, for which they paid $48.4 million in 2018.
But during closed private auctions, prices for such Ferraris reached 70 million. The absolute record belongs to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut, which was bought at a closed auction for 135 million euros.
