iPhone 15 will receive a new version of the UWB chip
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple plans to improve connectivity between the new iPhones and the Apple Vision Pro headset starting with iPhone 15.
Kuo said that Apple will “aggressively update the hardware specifications” of the iPhone as part of its efforts to build a competitive ecosystem surrounding the Vision Pro: hardware specifications – Wi-Fi and UWB.
The first step in this process will reportedly be upgrading the ultra-wideband (UWB) chip inside the iPhone 15. According to Kuo, the iPhone 15 will likely use a new version of the U1 chip.
Apple Vision Pro will work best with the iPhone 15 and beyond
“iPhone 15 will most likely update the UWB specification and move the manufacturing process from 16nm to the more advanced 7nm, which will improve performance or reduce power consumption for nearby interactions,” says Kuo.
The Apple U1 chip first debuted in the iPhone 11, and it’s been included in every iPhone model since then. The U1 chip is also present in the Apple AirTag tracker, Apple Watch Series 6, HomePod mini, second generation HomePod, and the latest generation AirPods Pro charging case.
Apple uses the U1 chip for a number of different purposes, including device discovery, AirDrop, and more. Kuo believes the updated version of the U1 chip will improve the performance of these features, as well as play a key role in the integration between the Vision Pro and other Apple products.
