For over 14 years, Chad Duell captivated fans of General Hospital with his portrayal of Michael Corinthos. In November, the beloved actor announced his decision to step away from the iconic soap opera. While fans were left with questions, Duell has recently opened up about his reasons, offering insight into this pivotal moment in his life.
A Personal Shift for Chad Duell
During a candid appearance on the “Daily Drama” podcast on December 28, Duell, 37, shared the deeply personal reasons behind his departure. “It’s a life adjustment,” he admitted to cohosts Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson. “A lot of stuff’s been going on in my life. There are a few things behind it, but one thing I did say is my dad passed away, and I’m still coming to terms with that.”
The loss of his father significantly influenced Duell’s decision, as he reflected on the changes he needed to make for his mental and emotional well-being.
Prioritizing Family and Personal Growth
Beyond his professional life, Chad Duell’s focus has shifted to his family. The actor revealed his desire to spend more time in Arizona with his partner, Luana Lucci, and their 15-month-old son, Dawson.
“I’m preparing myself for the next chapters,” Duell shared. “Right now, I’m just trying to grow in ways that maybe I feel like I stifled myself in certain aspects. Sometimes you need to take drastic steps or make yourself feel uncomfortable, and that’s not something I’ve done in a long time.”
A Bittersweet Farewell
In his heartfelt November announcement, Duell expressed his gratitude to fans and coworkers who supported him throughout his tenure on General Hospital. “This wasn’t an easy decision for me, but it feels like the right time in my life,” he wrote via Instagram. “I’m beyond grateful to [executive producer] Frank Valentini, the cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who have been like family to me throughout this amazing journey.”
Although his departure marked the end of an era, Duell reassured fans that this “isn’t a goodbye — it’s a see you later.” Valentini, 62, even left the door open for a potential return, signaling that Michael Corinthos’ story may not be over just yet.
A New Beginning in 2025
As Duell looks to the future, he’s optimistic about the opportunities ahead. “Coming in January, I have a few things planned that I want to do for myself,” he teased during the podcast interview. “It’s different because I have a kid now. But also for him, for me, and for everybody, doing what’s best for me — spiritually, mentally, everything — will only reflect my energy in a better way towards everybody around me.”
This period of transition is about more than just career changes. Duell emphasized the importance of self-care, noting that he’s learning to prioritize his own needs for the first time in years. “I want to make sure that I take care of myself as well, which I haven’t always done.”
Reflecting on His Journey
Looking back on his time as Michael Corinthos, Duell recognized the profound impact the role had on his life. Playing the adoptive son of mob boss Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) brought stability and a sense of identity, but it also became a comfort zone that he’s ready to step out of.
“I feel like I had a very strong comfort in this for such a long time that my identity was wrapped up in that,” he explained. “It’s going to be a process, but unraveling that and really seeing who I am and where I am now in my life is going to be a little journey.”
What’s Next for Chad Duell?
Although the future is uncertain, Duell remains focused on personal and professional growth. “There is a lot of work I have to do to achieve the potential that I know I have. Not just career-wise, but in a lot of aspects,” he said. Fans are eager to see what this new chapter holds for the talented actor.
