Until the end of 2025
General Motors intends to delay the start of production of some of its all-electric pickup trucks at the Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan.
The plant currently produces the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, which will be discontinued later this year. The plant was due to be retooled to produce pickup trucks based on Ultium technology and was scheduled to return to service in the first quarter of 2025, about a year from now.
Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV production delayed by two years
However, according to Automotive News, a General Motors spokesman said Tuesday that the start of production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV at the plant will be delayed until the end of 2025, two years.
The company explains that the decision is not due to the ongoing UAW strike but to several other reasons, such as “demand for electric vehicles, the need for engineering upgrades to improve vehicle profitability, and better capital management.”
At current prices and production costs, demand is expected to be too low. To increase volumes and justify investment in a plant, prices must be lower, resulting in the need to cut costs. This will require engineering improvements and time.
