Chrome OS laptop sales nearly quadruple in a year
The demand for laptop computers running the Chrome OS operating system in the global market is growing rapidly. Such devices are in demand in light of the development of distance learning platforms against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic.
In the first quarter of this year, shipments of Chromebooks, according to Digitimes Research, exceeded 10 million units. This is 280% more than in the first quarter of 2020.
It is noted that HP, Samsung Electronics, and ASUS showed record sales of notebooks based on Chrome OS in January-March. Shipments of Chromebooks powered by MediaTek processors have also reached new heights, at approximately 1.5 million units.
If we consider the world market of portable computers as a whole, then shipments in the last quarter were at the level of 57.51 million units. This is 8.7% less compared to the last quarter of 2020.
In the gaming laptop segment, analysts say ASUS and Micro-Star International (MSI) have seen sales growth. However, there is a shortage of high-performance processors and discrete graphics accelerators in this sector.
Apple shipped over 5 million MacBooks during the quarter. The year-on-year growth in shipments of these laptop computers was about 150%.
