Directors Guild of America Approves Provisional Jewish Diversity Committee

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is taking a step towards greater inclusivity with the formation of a provisional Jewish diversity committee. This move comes amidst a growing focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts within Hollywood and a rise in antisemitism in the entertainment industry.

A Voice for Jewish Directors: The Committee’s Formation

The idea for a Jewish diversity committee originated with DGA member Stuart Acher, who felt the need for a dedicated space for Jewish directors within the guild. Following discussions with fellow member Gregg Simon and support from DGA leadership, a petition garnered over 400 signatures from DGA members and industry supporters.

This petition highlighted the rise of antisemitism within the industry and beyond, emphasizing the importance of Jewish representation in the DGA’s ongoing diversity efforts.

The DGA National Board, recognizing the need for such a committee, approved its formation as a provisional group. This provisional status is a standard step for all DGA subgroups before achieving permanent standing.

Self-Identification and Education: Key Initiatives

As a first step, the DGA will implement a system allowing members to self-identify as ethnically Jewish on their profiles. This data collection will be crucial for understanding the employment landscape for Jewish directors and effectively connecting them with relevant resources and announcements.

The committee also recognizes the historical complexities surrounding Jewish identity disclosure. Archer acknowledges the “generational trauma” associated with self-identification for some Jewish people. The committee aims to foster a safe space for open dialogue and encourage a sense of pride within the Jewish DGA community.

Combating Antisemitism: A Core Focus

Education is a central pillar of the committee’s mission. They plan to address antisemitism within the DGA and the broader entertainment industry. This includes tackling harmful stereotypes like those portraying Jewish control of Hollywood.

The committee recognizes the discrepancy between the experiences of highly successful Jewish directors and those of mid-career and younger members. They aim to address the challenges faced by emerging Jewish directors encountering antisemitism and a lack of inclusion within the industry.

The committee’s efforts align with a broader trend of increased advocacy within the Jewish creative community. This includes an open letter to the Motion Picture Academy demanding inclusion in diversity standards and the formation of a permanent Jewish committee within the Writers Guild of America West.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Permanency

The newly formed provisional committee must now draft bylaws outlining its structure and goals. Following this step, the DGA National Board will hold a vote to determine whether to grant the committee permanent status.

The committee’s founders express gratitude towards the DGA for recognizing the need for Jewish representation and fostering a safe and inclusive environment for its Jewish members.
