DOJ Charges Russia with Funneling $10 Million to U.S. Media Company
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has unveiled a criminal case against two Russian state media employees for allegedly funneling $10 million to an unidentified U.S. media company. The scheme involved the creation and dissemination of pro-Russian propaganda through social media platforms.
The Alleged Conspiracy
The DOJ charges Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva with conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The two defendants, who remain at large, allegedly orchestrated a plan to funnel the $10 million to a Tennessee-based online content creation company.
Targeting U.S. Influence
The unidentified media company, referred to as “Company-1,” was publicly launched in November 2023 and has since produced nearly 2,000 videos on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). These videos promote pro-Russian narratives and aim to influence public opinion in the United States.
Tenet Media: A Possible Target
While the DOJ has not explicitly named the company involved, the description aligns with Tennessee-based Tenet Media, which funds videos created by conservative influencers. The company’s recent content has featured prominent figures like Lara Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Kari Lake.
Influencer Reactions
Influencers Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, and Benny Johnson, who have been affiliated with Tenet Media, have responded to the DOJ’s allegations. Pool has vehemently condemned Russian President Putin, while Johnson has stated that his involvement with the company was limited and terminated.
Seizing Kremlin-Controlled Websites
In addition to the criminal charges, the DOJ has seized 32 internet domains controlled by the Kremlin. These websites were designed to spread Russian propaganda under the guise of authentic news sources. The FBI has emphasized the importance of exposing and disrupting such foreign influence campaigns.
The Implications of Foreign Interference
The DOJ’s investigation highlights the ongoing threat of foreign interference in U.S. politics and media. Such attempts to sow division and manipulate public opinion can undermine democratic processes and erode trust in institutions.
