Last month, Neuralink said it received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its first human clinical trial, a milestone for the startup. At the same time, the company is facing investigations in the United States over animal experiments. The FDA acknowledged that the agency had cleared Neuralink to use its brain implant and surgical robot for trials, but declined to provide more details.

Earlier, Elon Musk said that Neuralink plans to implant the chip in the first patient with tetraplegia, or paralysis of the lower extremities.

It is not yet known how many patients his company plans to implant brain chips in the first trials and how long the surgery will take for each patient.
