Extensions in Firefox for Android are now severely limited.

Developers from the Mozilla organization reported good news for fans of the Firefox browser. Mobile Firefox for Android will soon have an “open ecosystem of extensions”.

An exact release date for this feature has yet to be announced, but in a blog post by Mozilla’s Scott DeVaney, he noted that it should be available before the end of the year. More details will be announced next month.

The developers claim that once launched, Firefox will be “the only major browser for Android that supports an open ecosystem of extensions.”

Extensions are not currently supported on Chrome for Android, the OS’s default browser. On the iOS side, Apple recently added extension support to its Safari browser.

Technical support for extensions in Firefox for Android started many years ago, but compatibility was severely limited when the app was redesigned in 2020. It is currently possible to run any Firefox desktop extension with an Android app, which will require the debug menu to be enabled, and Mozilla warns that this option is for “developers and advanced users” and may “lead to unexpected results.”
