Huawei today introduced not only the flagship Mate 60 Pro+ but also the new foldable smartphone Mate X5. And this is a very interesting device in its essence.
The fact is that technically this is an almost complete copy of the Mate X3, but it came out less than six months ago and has become incredibly popular. You’d think the Mate X5 would be at least a slightly improved version of the Mate X3, but it’s not. Moreover, the performance of the new product is even lower.
The whole secret is in the platform. The Mate X5 is the Mate X3, but instead of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, the acclaimed Kirin 9000s SoC is used. For what reasons Huawei decided to relaunch the smartphone with a new platform is not known exactly, but perhaps the goal is to stop depending on Qualcomm, present its return to the SoC market on a larger scale, and at the same time add 5G support to its most expensive smartphone. It may well be that the release of the Mate X5 is an indication that we will no longer see Qualcomm platforms in Huawei flagships. However, this is exactly what the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims.
Returning to the smartphone, we can add that the Mate X5 differs from the Mate X3 only in the platform and battery. The new product has a slightly higher capacity: 5060 mAh with support for 66-watt charging.
All other parameters are identical. The smartphone is equipped with a 7.85-inch internal flexible screen (2496 × 2224 pixels, LTPO, 120 Hz) and a 6.4-inch external display (LTPO, 120 Hz, Full HD+ 2504 × 1080 pixels), main camera (50 MP with optical stabilization, 13 MP ultra-wide-angle and 12 MP telephoto with 5x zoom), 8-megapixel selfie camera.
Dimensions are 156.9 × 72.4–141.5 × 5.3–11.08 mm with a weight of 243–245 g. There is no data on the price, but the Mate X5 will likely cost about the same $1,900 as the Mate X3.
