This will increase our own production

India has restricted imports of laptops, other personal computers, tablets and servers, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The changes take effect immediately. According to analysts, this is aimed at stimulating local production.

“Imports of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers and servers covered by HSN 8741 are now restricted,” the government notice said. Limited imports will be permitted subject to a valid license. The restriction will also not apply to passengers carrying these devices in their checked baggage.

In recent years, India has provided incentives to companies that produce domestically. The initiative has successfully attracted the attention of smartphone manufacturers and is now attracting increasing interest from chip and semiconductor manufacturers.

Dell and HP are among the companies that already have manufacturing facilities in India. The Government of India is committed to further expanding local manufacturing and making the country a desirable destination for Apple and its manufacturing partners. However, the country currently spends billions of dollars importing laptops and other equipment.

In May, the Indian government announced a $2 billion support program for laptop, PC and server businesses.
