Toyota Land Cruiser is in the top 3, but it is not the leader
American car classifier iSeeCars analyzed more than two million cars for sale in the US in order to choose the most reliable ones. Toyota was among the leaders: this brand owns 10 models from the top 20.
The most reliable cars were selected by mileage. At least 2.5% of the cars of each model from this list have traveled 320,000 km, and those that are at the top of the list (usually 1% of such cars were recruited) are able to overcome from 370,00 to 478,000 km. For example, 1% of Toyota Sequoia has at least 477,000 km on the odometer.
” What we’re seeing is a list of highly reliable vehicles capable of over a quarter of a million miles [400,000 km] with proper maintenance ,” said iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer. “ And to be clear: this study does not speak about the maximum life of these vehicles. It simply displays the current odometer reading. Most of these vehicles are still in use ,” he added.
This is how the top 20 cars of highly reliable cars look like (potential mileage is indicated in brackets – the mileage that a car is capable of with proper maintenance):
- Toyota Sequoia (477,000 km);
- Toyota Land Cruiser (451,000 km);
- Chevrolet Suburban (427,000 km);
- Toyota Tundra (412,000 km);
- GMC Yukon XL (406,000 km);
- Toyota Prius (403,000 km);
- Chevrolet Tahoe (403,000 km);
- Honda Ridgeline (400,000 km);
- Toyota Avalon (395,000 km);
- Toyota Highlander Hybrid (395,000 km);
- Ford Expedition (394,000 km);
- Toyota 4Runner (394,000 km);
- Toyota Sienna (385,000 km);
- GMC Yukon (385,000 km);
- Honda Pilot (381,000 km);
- Honda Odyssey (379,000 km);
- Toyota Tacoma (379,000 km);
- Nissan Titan (375,000 km);
- Ford F-150 (373,000 km);
- Toyota Camry Hybrid (370,000 km).
As you can see, the list includes mainly large SUVs and pickups, which is not surprising: manufacturers put a large margin of safety into these cars, this applies to both the body and engines and suspension. The list of the most reliable cars also includes two Toyota sedans (Avalon and Camry), one hatchback (Toyota Prius) and two minivans (Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey).
“ Vehicles like the Prius and Camry Hybrid deliver exceptional fuel economy. They can save car owners up to $10,000 in fuel over 250,000 miles compared to similarly sized non-hybrid vehicles ,” Brouwer noted.
