Installation of the El Capitan system has started

It will launch next year

At the end of this year, the Aurora supercomputer based on Intel components should be put into operation , the performance of which will exceed 2 exaflops, due to which it will approximately double the Frontier system based on AMD components and take the place of the most productive supercomputer. However, perhaps not for long. Livermore National Laboratory has announced that it has begun installation of the El Capitan system, which could outperform the Aurora.

El Capitan will be released later. There is no exact date yet, but the system will definitely be launched only next year. Its performance will also exceed 2 exaflops, but it is expected that by the time of launch, it is El Capitan that will be the most productive supercomputer in the world, that is, AMD will once again regain the title of the manufacturer of the CPU and GPU that underlie the most powerful computer on Earth.

El Capitan, we recall, will be based on the latest Instinct MI300 accelerators, which combine Zen 4 processor cores, CDNA 3 GPUs and HBM3 memory.

The example of the supercomputer market shows how rapidly these technologies have been developing recently. The Top500 leader, the Frontier system, was launched over a year ago, and is still almost three times superior to its closest competitor, the Fugaku system. And here, literally in six months or a year, we will get two systems at once with a performance of over 2 exaflops.
