iPhone 12 is in no hurry to go to stores: the first shipments of smartphones will be ready only in mid-September

Apple’s major partners, Qualcomm and Broadcom, have long been unashamed to admit that the delay in launching 5G versions of the iPhone will negatively impact their third-quarter revenue. Now sources say that the first batch of new iPhones will roll off the assembly line no earlier than mid-September. Mass release of new products will be mastered only in early October.

The Nikkei Asian Review, through its own channels, found out that the cheaper version of the iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display and two cameras on the back will be the first to enter the conveyor. This modification will account for up to 40% of the production volume this year. Apple’s plans for the number of new-generation iPhones also need to be constantly adjusted. If at the beginning of the year it was about 100 million units, then by the summer it was reduced to 80 million units, and now Apple expects to release no more than 73-74 million units of smartphones of the new family.

IPad tablets are in good demand, so for the period from September to December, Apple plans to release 27 million copies of the new generation devices. This is almost the same as it was released in the entire second half of the previous year. Apple will not be releasing a refreshed iPhone SE next spring, sources said. The current-generation smartphone, which debuted in the spring, allowed Apple to increase its smartphone shipments by 11.2% YoY in the second quarter of 2020, which no other manufacturer has been able to do amid the pandemic.

Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron will manufacture new iPads and 5G-enabled Apple smartphones in China, while Luxshare, which recently bought the company from Wistron, will also launch new iPhones. Unlike in previous years, when each week of the lifecycle increased the production of new iPhones, this year the orders will be spread more evenly overtime to make it easier for Apple contractors. The pandemic was one of the reasons for the delay in the new iPhones, but they need to certify and test 5G-enabled devices has also contributed.
