Counterpoint Research data shows U.S. smartphone shipments fell 19% in the third quarter of 2023 as more and more Americans put off upgrading their smartphones.

Smartphone shipments in the US have declined for four straight quarters. In particular, shipments of Samsung, Google and TCL decreased by 26%, 37% and 51% respectively. Apple’s shipments fell 11% compared to the third quarter of 2022.

iPhone 15 sales are at a record low.

Counterpoint cites three reasons that are contributing to the sluggish smartphone market in the US. Firstly, smartphones now have greater durability and better build quality than before. Secondly, new models released often do not live up to expectations in terms of technical upgrades. Thirdly, the uncertainty of the macroeconomic situation plays an important role.

As for the iPhone 15, sales are at historically low levels. “We expect the ratio to recover seasonally in the fourth quarter, but it may still be worse than the same period last year,” Counterpoint said.

Analysts are predicting iPhone 15 sales could hit a record low in the holiday quarter.
