Koei Tecmo Doubles Down on AAA Games, Shifts Focus from Mobile

Koei Tecmo, the renowned Japanese video game publisher and developer, has announced a significant shift in its development strategy. The company plans to double its workforce and invest heavily in AAA game development, signaling a departure from its traditional focus on mobile gaming.

The Rise of AAA Gaming

This strategic shift is largely influenced by the recent success of Chinese and Korean AAA titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Stellar Blade. Koei Tecmo executives believe that the console and PC gaming market is poised for substantial growth, driven by the release of new hardware and the migration of mobile gamers to more powerful platforms.

A Mobile Market Reaches Maturity

In contrast, the mobile gaming market, once a major growth driver, is now viewed as reaching maturity. Koei Tecmo recognizes that significant growth in this sector is unlikely, prompting the company to redirect its resources towards AAA game development.

Expanding the Workforce

To support this ambitious plan, Koei Tecmo intends to double its workforce from 2,500 to 5,000 employees. This expansion will allow the company to develop and release multiple AAA titles annually, ensuring a consistent stream of high-quality games.

Upcoming Titles and Future Plans

While Koei Tecmo is focused on the future, it also has several exciting projects in the pipeline. In the near term, fans can look forward to the release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Additionally, the company is working on mid-sized titles like Fairy Tail 2 and Atelier Yumia.

Beyond these upcoming releases, Koei Tecmo’s newly formed AAA studio is hard at work on an unannounced project. This highly anticipated title is expected to showcase the company’s commitment to delivering top-tier gaming experiences.

A Bold Move for the Future

Koei Tecmo’s decision to prioritize AAA game development is a bold and strategic move. By leveraging the growing popularity of console and PC gaming, the company aims to solidify its position as a major player in the industry. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Koei Tecmo is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging trends and deliver unforgettable gaming experiences.
