LACMA Art+Film Gala Honors Simone Leigh and Baz Luhrmann

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has announced the honorees for its 13th annual Art+Film Gala, which will take place on Saturday, November 2nd. Multidisciplinary artist Simone Leigh and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann will be celebrated for their significant contributions to the worlds of art and film.

A Night of Celebration

The Art+Film Gala is a prestigious event that brings together prominent figures from the art and film industries. This year’s gala will feature a performance by the talented singer-songwriter Charli XCX, known for her hit album “Brat.”

Gala Co-Chairs and Sponsors

Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio will once again serve as co-chairs of the gala, a position they have held since 2011. Gucci, a longtime supporter of the event, will continue its partnership with LACMA as a sponsor.

Supporting LACMA’s Mission

Proceeds from the Art+Film Gala will directly support LACMA’s mission to make film a central part of its curatorial programming. The funds will be used for exhibitions, acquisitions, and educational programs that explore the intersection of art and film.

Honoring Simone Leigh

Simone Leigh, a renowned multidisciplinary artist, is being honored for her groundbreaking work. Her ceramic and bronze sculptures have been exhibited at prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Guggenheim and Tate Gallery. Leigh’s art is currently featured in an exhibition at both LACMA and the California African American Museum (CAAM).

In 2022, Leigh represented the United States at the 59th annual Venice Biennale with her exhibition “Simone Leigh: Sovereignty.” Her work is known for its powerful and moving depictions of Black femme subjects, and she has become a leading voice in contemporary art.

Celebrating Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann, a celebrated Australian filmmaker, is also being honored at the Art+Film Gala. Luhrmann’s career spans over three decades, and he is known for his imaginative and passionate films such as “Romeo + Juliet,” “Moulin Rouge,” “Australia,” “The Great Gatsby,” and the recent Academy Award-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
