Maruti Ertiga and Toyota Innova Hycross Lead MPV Sales

The Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) segment in India continued to show strong performance in the Financial Year 2025, with several models posting positive growth. Topping the charts were the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Hycross, both demonstrating the immense popularity of practical family cars in the Indian market.

Let’s dive deeper into the sales performance, year-over-year growth, and the changing dynamics of the MPV segment in FY 2025.

FY 2025 MPV Sales Overview: Strong Performance Across the Segment

The MPV segment enjoyed a largely positive trend in FY 2025, with more than half of the models recording year-on-year growth. Consumers continued to prioritize vehicles that offer a blend of spacious interiors, practicality, and comfort, fueling demand in this category.

However, not every model had a reason to celebrate — while the likes of the Ertiga, Innova Hycross, and Carens witnessed growth, models like the Maruti XL6 and Invicto faced a drop in sales.

Maruti Ertiga: The Uncontested Leader

Ertiga Sales Performance

The Maruti Ertiga emerged as the top-selling MPV in FY 2025, with an impressive dispatch of 1,90,972 units. Compared to the 1,49,747 units sold in FY 2024, this marks a remarkable growth of 28%.

Reasons Behind Ertiga’s Success

  • Affordability paired with strong brand trust.

  • Availability of CNG variants catering to budget-conscious buyers.

  • Spacious and practical design ideal for large families.

  • Wide dealership and service network across India.

The Ertiga’s growth of around 41,000 additional units clearly indicates its unmatched appeal in the MPV category.

Toyota Innova Hycross and Crysta: Solid Second Spot

Toyota’s Combined Strength

The Toyota Innova Hycross and Innova Crysta together managed to dispatch 1,07,204 units in FY 2025, compared to 98,181 units in FY 2024. This translates to a healthy 9% growth.

Key Factors for Toyota’s Performance

  • Hybrid technology adoption in the Hycross model.

  • Robust build quality and premium cabin experience.

  • Loyal customer base, especially among urban families and fleet operators.

Toyota’s success shows the growing shift towards hybrid powertrains and premium MPV experiences.

Kia Carens: Steady and Reliable Performer

Carens Sales Analysis

The Kia Carens secured the third position on the list, selling 64,609 units in FY 2025 versus 63,167 units in FY 2024, reflecting a modest growth of 2%.

Why Carens Continues to Perform

  • Competitive feature-packed trims at aggressive pricing.

  • Multiple powertrain options including petrol, diesel, and automatic variants.

  • Strong focus on safety features even on lower trims.

Though growth was marginal, Kia’s consistent performance points to the Carens’ acceptance in the urban family market.

Maruti XL6: A Sharp Decline

XL6 Sales Drop

The Maruti XL6 faced a significant setback, with sales dropping from 45,334 units in FY 2024 to 37,111 units in FY 2025 — a decline of 18%.

Possible Reasons for the Dip

  • Increased competition from premium rivals like the Kia Carens and Toyota Rumion.

  • A perception gap between premium pricing and actual luxury feel.

  • Preference shift towards SUV-styled vehicles.

Maruti will likely need to refresh the XL6 offering soon to regain market momentum.

Maruti Invicto: Struggling to Make a Mark

Invicto Sales Overview

The Maruti Invicto, despite being positioned as a premium MPV based on the Toyota Innova Hycross, dispatched only 4,063 units in FY 2025, showing an 8% decline compared to FY 2024.

Challenges Faced by Invicto

  • High price positioning deterring traditional Maruti buyers.

  • Direct competition with the already strong Toyota Innova Hycross.

  • Limited differentiation from its Toyota counterpart.

Clearly, Maruti needs to rethink its premium MPV strategy if it hopes to gain ground in this space.
