Series X is the intermediate generation

Recently, the head of the Xbox division, Phil Spencer, said that Microsoft is not going to release more powerful intermediate generation consoles yet , as they are satisfied with the current hardware. However, now even more interesting information has appeared on this subject. It turns out that the conditional Xbox Series X Pro already exists – this is the usual Series X.

Microsoft explained this aspect to journalists three years ago

John Linneman from Digital Foundry said that when Microsoft first showed its new consoles to journalists, the company said that the Xbox Series X is the intermediate generation console, they just decided to release it right away. And the Series S is the basic new console. That is, it turns out that Microsoft could have released only Series S initially, and would have released Series X around now.

And although this was a statement from Microsoft itself, it looks strange. The Series S, even aside from its limited amount of RAM and storage, is just pretty weak. Its performance is 4 TFLOPS, while the Xbox One X is 6 TFLOPS. Yes, gaming performance has a very indirect relation to teraflops, however, even in games it is clear that One X is sometimes better than Series S. And in general, it is very strange to release a new console that is almost twice as weak as its predecessor, even if only in teraflops.

Be that as it may, this statement is important, because it turns out that Microsoft, apparently, was not originally going to release an updated console for the current generation.
