Modder ported Grand Theft Auto III to the hacked Nintendo Switch

Grand Theft Auto III didn’t officially launch on Nintendo Switch, but fans of the game brought it over from PC. The port is based on re3 – a reverse engineering project for the PC version. Users of the modified console were able to launch the game.

On Nintendo Switch, the action runs in 1080p / 720p in TV and handheld modes, respectively (the same frame rate, 30 frames / s). There is also an option to unlock the frame rate, but enabling it can lead to some problems. In addition, the original version of Grand Theft Auto III reportedly uses compressed audio files, which caused poor performance on Nintendo Switch as the console’s processor wasted resources decoding music and dialogue. The modder solved this problem by batch converting the entire game library to an uncompressed format so as not to waste the already limited system resources.

Grand Theft Auto III is the first 3D part of the series. It was released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2, with a subsequent release on PC, Xbox, Android, and iOS. The action of this crime epic takes place in Liberty City, where people from all walks of life live.
