Pixel 9 Series: Tensor G4 Offers Incremental Upgrades, Focus on Efficiency

Google’s highly anticipated Pixel 9 series is on the horizon, and while expectations for groundbreaking advancements were high, recent leaks suggest a more modest approach to the Tensor G4 chipset powering the devices.

Tensor G4: A Measured Upgrade

The Tensor G4, Google’s second-generation custom silicon, is poised to offer incremental improvements over its predecessor, the Tensor G3. While the chip promises efficiency gains and refined performance, it appears to be a strategic step rather than a leap forward.

Core Architecture and Performance

The Tensor G4 adopts a 4+3+1 core configuration, incorporating ARMv9.2 architecture. This arrangement comprises Cortex-A520, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-X4 cores. While clock speeds have received a slight boost, the overall multi-core performance is expected to witness only minor enhancements. Preliminary Geekbench scores suggest approximately an 11% increase in single-core performance and a modest 3% improvement in multi-core capabilities compared to the Tensor G3.

Efficiency and Power Consumption

A key focus for the Tensor G4 is improved efficiency. The refined core layout is designed to optimize cooling and reduce power consumption. However, the Exynos Modem 5400, despite offering satellite connectivity and a 50% power efficiency boost over its predecessor, remains a significant power draw. It’s worth noting that some Pixel 9 models, such as the potential Pixel 9a, might retain the Exynos Modem 5300 to manage costs.

GPU and Other Components

The graphics department sees a modest upgrade with the Mali-G715 GPU clocked at 940 MHz, surpassing the Tensor G3’s 890 MHz. Google’s custom IP blocks, including Edge TPU, GXP, BigWave, and Titan M2, remain intact, ensuring consistent performance in AI, camera, and security domains. The chip retains Samsung’s FOPLP packaging, defying rumors of an upgrade to FOWLP.

Development Challenges and Strategic Shift

Initially, Google aimed for a fully custom chip codenamed “redondo,” developed independently of Samsung. However, due to development delays, the company opted for a more incremental approach with “zumapro,” a collaborative effort with Samsung. This decision accelerated the Pixel 9 series development by leveraging Tensor G3 prototypes.

Pixel 9 Series: Focus on Software and Features

Given the measured hardware upgrades, the Pixel 9 series is expected to shine through software enhancements. Google’s expertise in software optimization will be crucial in delivering a compelling user experience. The upcoming Made by Google event on August 13 will shed light on the Tensor G4’s performance, benchmark scores, and other details.
