Samsung took half of the global smartphone display market

Strategy Analytics estimated the size of the global smartphone display market for the last year: the industry showed growth, despite the decline in cellular devices’ sales as a whole.

In 2020, shipments of smartphones decreased due to the pandemic and a difficult economic environment. Simultaneously, the supply of displays in this segment increased in monetary terms by 7% compared to 2019 – up to $ 43 billion.

This picture, analysts say, is due to the growing demand for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, which cost more than conventional LCD screens. Besides, more expensive screens are being installed in smartphones with 5G support, which became the main catalyst for the market last year.

Samsung Display is the undisputed leader in the smartphone display industry: its share in the total revenue for the last year was exactly 50%. In second place is BOE Technology, with a score of approximately 15%. Well, LG Display closes the top three, controlling 8% of the industry.

Thus, the top three manufacturers receive almost three-quarters (73%) of the total revenue in the smartphone panel market. All other suppliers combined in 2020 showed a result of 27%.
