Soaring Through Time: Finnair Celebrates 100 Years of Connecting People and Places

This week marks a momentous occasion for Finnair, Finland’s national airline. They proudly celebrate 100 years of flight, a journey that began with a single mail delivery and blossomed into a vast network connecting passengers across the globe.

A Historic First Flight: Linking Helsinki and Tallinn

The story starts on November 1st, 1923, with the founding of Aero O/Y, the forerunner of today’s Finnair. Just a few months later, on March 20th, 1924, aviation history was made. The company’s inaugural flight took off from Helsinki, Finland, carrying not passengers, but a vital cargo of mail destined for Tallinn, Estonia. This first flight, though carrying no passengers, marked the beginning of a legacy of connecting people and places within Northern Europe.

This historic journey was undertaken aboard a Junkers F 13 D-335 Regenpfeifer, a German-built seaplane uniquely equipped for the region’s diverse terrain. This versatile aircraft boasts skis for winter landings and floats for summer water landings, ensuring year-round operation. While this inaugural flight didn’t carry passengers, it did transport 162kg (337lb) of mail, highlighting the critical role early aviation played in improving communication and connectivity.

From Seaplanes to Modern Marvels: The Evolution of Finnair’s Fleet

The initial mail service between Helsinki and Tallinn was just the first chapter in Finnair’s ever-evolving story. The early years saw the airline expand its fleet and operations, transitioning from seaplanes to more traditional land-based aircraft. This shift allowed Finnair to reach new destinations and cater to a growing demand for passenger travel.

Today, Finnair boasts a modern fleet of advanced jet airliners, capable of traversing vast distances in comfort and efficiency. Finnair’s commitment to innovation extends beyond its aircraft. They continuously improve their passenger experience, offering comfortable cabins, in-flight entertainment options, and seamless connections throughout their network.

Despite embracing modern technology, Finnair hasn’t forgotten its roots. The Helsinki to Tallinn route, the birthplace of Finnair’s journey, remains a crucial link in their network, with up to 10 daily flights serving these two vibrant capital cities.

A Century of Service: Connecting the Baltics and Beyond

Anssi Partanen, Finnair European Market Director, expressed his immense pride in Finnair’s centenary: “We are extremely proud to be celebrating 100 years since our first flight took off from Helsinki, bound for Tallinn, Estonia.” He further emphasizes the importance of the Baltics market: “Estonia is an incredibly important market for Finnair…marking both a century since Finnair’s first-ever commercial flight and also 100 years of serving the Baltics – an increasingly popular market for those traveling from the UK & Ireland.”

This anniversary coincides with the exciting relaunch of direct flights from Helsinki to Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city and a designated European Capital of Culture for 2024. This new service, commencing on March 31st, 2024, offers 12 weekly flights operated by Finnair’s modern ATR regional aircraft.

The Tartu connection holds additional significance as it marks the return of commercial air travel to the city. Finnair will be the sole airline offering direct scheduled flights to and from Tartu, providing a convenient and efficient travel option for passengers.

Connecting the World with Seamless Travel Experiences

Finnair understands the importance of smooth connections for passengers traveling long distances. Recognizing this, they’ve meticulously timed their flights from major UK airports like London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Dublin to seamlessly connect with onward flights at Helsinki Airport. Finnair’s commitment to passenger comfort extends to its efficient terminal layout, allowing for quick and stress-free transfers between connecting flights, with some connections as short as 35 minutes.

This dedication to providing a seamless travel experience, combined with its extensive network and modern fleet, positions Finnair as a leading airline for travelers seeking a comfortable and convenient way to explore Europe and beyond.
