Powertrain Breakdown

To understand the Punch EV’s performance, it’s essential to examine its powertrain. The Long Range variant houses a single electric motor that generates a respectable 122 PS and 190 Nm of torque. Tata claims a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 9.5 seconds, and a top speed of 140 kmph.

Real-World Acceleration Performance

To gauge the Punch EV Long Range’s true potential, we conducted extensive acceleration tests in all three drive modes: Eco, City, and Sport.

  • Sport Mode: This mode unleashes the full potential of the electric motor. Our tests revealed a 0-100 kmph time of 9.05 seconds, marginally beating the claimed figure. The quarter-mile run was completed in 16.74 seconds at 132.24 kmph. The car exhibited impressive responsiveness in kickdown scenarios, accelerating from 20-80 kmph in just 4.94 seconds.
  • City Mode: Shifting to City mode, the Punch EV’s acceleration becomes more subdued. The 0-100 kmph time stretched to 13.10 seconds, indicating a noticeable difference compared to Sport mode.
  • Eco Mode: As expected, Eco mode prioritizes efficiency over performance. The 0-100 kmph sprint took 13.31 seconds, highlighting the mode’s focus on maximizing range.

While the difference between City and Eco modes may seem minor, it’s evident that Sport mode is the clear choice for those seeking spirited performance.

Braking Performance

To assess the Punch EV Long Range’s braking capabilities, we conducted tests in wet conditions. Equipped with all-wheel disc brakes and 16-inch alloy wheels, the SUV exhibited commendable stopping power. From 100 kmph, it took 44.66 meters to come to a complete halt, while from 80 kmph, the stopping distance was 27.52 meters. It’s important to note that braking performance can be influenced by various factors, including road conditions and tire type.

Pricing and Competition

Priced between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 15.48 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Punch EV competes directly with the Citroen eC3. It also serves as a premium alternative to the MG Comet EV, Tata Tiago EV, and Tata Tigor EV.
