The camera of smartphones Samsung Galaxy S21 will do without the ToF sensor
At the beginning of next year, Samsung is announcing the Galaxy S21 smartphones, which will replace the current Galaxy S20. Network sources have published a new piece of information about future flagships.
To date, it is known that the series will include the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 +, and Galaxy S21 Ultra models. The fifth-generation (5G) cellular versions of these smartphones are codenamed SM-G991, SM-G996, and SM-G998, respectively. There is a possibility that the devices will include various branded processors Samsung Exynos.
A new piece of information concerns the main camera of smartphones of the Galaxy S21 family. It is alleged that it will not receive a ToF (Time of Flight) sensor designed to collect scene depth data.
There are several reasons for the decision to abandon the ToF sensor. It was expected that such a module would be useful in light of the development of augmented (AR) and virtual (VR) reality applications. However, the potential of these technologies has not yet been fully revealed. In addition, it turned out that Samsung’s ToF solution is inferior in capabilities to a similar system in Apple devices.
Therefore, the South Korean giant decided not to use the ToF sensor in the recently announced smartphones of the Galaxy Note 20. There will be no such sensor in the future Galaxy S21 devices.
However, as noted, Samsung has not completely abandoned the development of technology yet. Perhaps an improved ToF solution will appear in other smartphones of the company.
