The head of Intel announced the intention to continue the construction of factories in Oregon
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger visited the company’s Hillsborough plants this week. He said that the company has not completed the work on expanding its presence in the state during the trip and expects to commission new production facilities in the coming years.
“ I expect that in three or four years, we will have another expansion that we will implement in the production network, ” – quotes the source of the words of Mr. Gelsinger.
This is not the first time Intel has announced its intention to expand its presence in Oregon after completing the third phase of its D1X factory expansion, which is coming to an end. Intel develops each new generation of its processors at factories in Oregon, after which production is transferred to the company’s plants in Arizona, Ireland, and Israel.
Before Patrick Gelsinger took over as CEO in February this year, Intel was considering outsourcing advanced manufacturing, diminishing Oregon’s relevance as a major research center. After the arrival of a new leader, Intel changed plans and now intends to continue building factories in different countries of the world and offers its own factories for contract manufacturing of semiconductor products.
In four months at the helm of the company, Gelsinger managed to initiate an unprecedented expenditure on the expansion of Intel’s production network. He also actively advocated introducing government incentives in the semiconductor industry in Europe and the United States to reduce dependence on chip manufacturers from Taiwan and South Korea.
This year, Intel announced its intention to invest $ 20 billion to build two new plants in Arizona and announced a $ 3.5 billion investment to expand production in New Mexico. In addition, the company confirmed plans to expand production capacity in Israel, for the implementation of which $ 10 billion will be allocated.
