New details have emerged about the ninth-generation 2025 Toyota Camry , which has received significant changes to the powertrain.
For the first time in history, the Camry is available exclusively as a four-cylinder hybrid. This means that the legendary Camry three and five, equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, is becoming a thing of the past. Additionally, the lineup also lacks a sporty TRD model.
Toyota has offered a V6 engine option in the Camry for decades. The third generation model introduced the six-cylinder engine to the United States for the 1988 model year. This 2.5-liter powerplant produced about 153 hp, while the base 2-liter four-cylinder engine at the time only made about 114 hp. Since then, the V6 has become the mainstay of the Camry lineup.
Toyota Camry 2025 lost its legendary V6 engine and TRD version
The situation changed in 2025. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine produces 225 hp. on the front wheels or 232 hp. with all-wheel drive, which is much less than the 301 horsepower of the outgoing V6.
When asked by Motor1 about the lack of a V6 engine, a Toyota spokesperson said the press release included “all trim levels and powertrains for the 2025 model year.” A Toyota spokesman later added that “the V6 is finished.”
The situation is similar with the TRD package, which has disappeared from the lineup. Among the available trim levels, the top-end is the XSE, which is equipped with two-tone paint and 19-inch wheels. Buyers can choose a two-tone color scheme with a Midnight Black Metallic roof and Ocean Gem, Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal or Supersonic Red body.
