In just 3-4 years
Volkswagen plans to introduce a new, more affordable all-electric model in the United States in the not-too-distant future.
According to Reuters, Reinhard Fischer, senior vice president and head of strategy at Volkswagen Group of America, said at the Reuters Events Automotive USA 2023 conference in Detroit that the company plans to build an electric car that costs less than $35,000. A new, more affordable model may appear on the market in 3-4 years.
Volkswagen will release its cheapest electric car
The US and Mexico are being considered as possible production sites for the cheaper electric vehicle. In addition, Volkswagen is also considering localizing battery pack assembly to qualify for battery-related incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA).
The price could be lower if the $7,500 federal tax credit is still in effect when the car is launched.
Currently available Volkswagen ID. The entry-level 4 starts at $40,000.
