X is not a party to the pan-European code of conduct against fake news

Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, is the largest source of fake news, as stated by Vice-President of the European Commission Vera Jourová.

Social network X has not signed up to the pan-European code of conduct to combat fake news in social networks and advertising campaigns. At the same time, according to Jourova, X has “the highest ratio of unreliable/disinformation posts.”

The Code of Conduct is a set of regulatory standards to allow companies such as Google, TikTok, Microsoft, and Meta* to do more to combat fake news across the 27-member bloc. It was built on an earlier version published in 2018.

“A tough law comes with obligations, so my message on Twitter is: ‘You have to follow a tough law and we will watch what you do,’” she said. The code underpins the Digital Services Act, which sets out strict rules for content moderation.

Jourová added that with parliamentary elections in Slovakia scheduled for September 30 and presidential elections in Poland on October 15, it was important for platforms to address the risks of online interference.
