On Thursday, Australian scientists said that in what they described as a breakthrough in pregnancy research by taking a standard vitamin supplement could significantly reduce the number of miscarriages and congenital disabilities world wide.

According to the study that has published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the deficiency in an essential module among pregnant women stopped embryos and babies organs from developing correctly in the womb. By taking the dietary supplement vitamin B3 which also known as niacin could have treated (what is vitamin niacin?).

Sally Dunwoodie, who is a biomedical researcher at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, says that “Now, after 12 years of research, our team has also discovered that this deficiency can have cured and miscarriages and birth defects prevented by taking an everyday vitamin.”

As a Historic Medical Breakthrough, Health Minister Greg hunt hailed the study. On Thursday, Hunt said that “Today announced provides new hope to the one in four pregnant women who suffer a miscarriage.And with 7.9 million babies throughout the world currently born with congenital disabilities every year, this breakthrough is incredible news.”

From miscarriages and congenital disabilities, the scientists used genetic sequencing on families suffering and found gene mutations that impaired production of the molecule, NAD.

To make NAD, with vitamin B3 found in meat and vegetables needed and they tested the effect of using the supplement on developing mice embryos that had similar NAD deficiencies as human ones, and found a significant change.

Also in a statement, Victor Chang Institute said that Into the mother diet before the vitamin B3 has introduced that embryos have either lost through miscarriages or the offspring have born with a range of severe congenital disabilities.

To measure NAD levels to identify that women have most at risk from having a baby, the next step has to develop a test with a congenital disability and to ensure then they had sufficient vitamin B3. For pregnant women, they added that current vitamin supplements that might not contain sufficient levels of vitamin B3.
